I’m looking for a strong weekly news podcast that is politically neutral?

Main Post:

I’m in America, which has become a bit of a shit show. It’s hard to find news sources that are entirely unbiased but I figured I’d give it a shot anyway.

If there’s nothing truly neutral, then I would prefer slightly left leaning (emphasis on the “slightly”).

I’m looking for general type of news: National, international, maybe some feel good stories for good measure. Not just politics.

Top Comment: you shouldn't want "neutral" necessarily, you should aim for "objective." the reason you don't find many sources that seem unbiased is because there's only one party that's running a felonious candidate who already attempted a coup once... I don't see how one could report on that in factual terms without making that candidate look bad. 🤷 what you're probably looking for is more fact-based reporting and less opinion and analysis, which is certainly out there. anyway, IMO the npr podcasts like up first (daily though, not weekly) are pretty fact-oriented. democracy now focuses on topics from a more left perspective, but is also more straight reporting, and a lot more international news than a lot of sources. but also daily. you can check out the ad fontes media bias chart here, and I believe the mobile app lets you search for any media source. https://adfontesmedia.com/interactive-media-bias-chart/

Looking for a weekly news email

Main Post:

I used to use news for escapism and then get caught up in nitty gritty stuff I have no control over. Cutting myself off completely has been peaceful but now I don’t know what’s going on. Has anyone found a middle ground? I think I’d like a weekly summary of significant world and US events, but I haven’t been able to find such a thing. Any suggestions? I’m wary of having an app on my phone that I can get sucked into any time I want distraction.

Watson Weekly starting! This news anchor is very cute

Main Post: Watson Weekly starting! This news anchor is very cute

Top Comment: I hope she requests a "News Anchor" outfit to go along with this. It would be hilarious if she just slowly scales it up. Also, I hope someone on Twitter's fanartist community designs her some news-y looking frames for her to put all of her news inside of.

Are there any good weekly news podcasts?

Main Post:

I currently listen to a couple daily podcasts, and I've found that I keep skipping them because it's overwhelming and frustrating. I feel like news doesn't need to be so frequent. They often cover things repeatedly because they didn't wait for context and need to report on every little thing as it happens. It's pretty exhausting that they treat everything with such urgency. Unfortunately, all the major news podcasts I can find publish daily. Are there any that publish weekly?

The World Next Week from CFR is good for global news. Rational Security is a good weekly show focusing on US based foreign policy and national security. The Josh Marshall Podcast is a good weekly recap of US political news.

Any good news source for once a day/once a week news consumption?

Main Post:

I'm looking for a reliable (unbiased) and comprehensive news source - that I can refer to once a day/once a week. I don't want to repetitively open youtube/ news apps in my phone that keeps updating every hour. Instead I'm looking for something that I can read in one sitting, which informs me of only the important issues. Any leads would be appreciated!

Weekly Worlds News Digest

Main Post:

What's the best way to consume news minimally? Anyone have recommendations for a weekly news digest/summary?

I firmly believe in awareness and would like to be be informed when there's major news that's going to affect the world for years to come (e.g., Russia invading Ukraine) but I couldn't care less about the majority of daily news. I often ask myself when deciding to read an article--is anyone going to care about this topic in 5 years?

Up until 2 weeks ago, I read the Weekend Briefing from NYT. It was by no means complete or unbiased, but I felt it did the trick. Evidently they discontinued it and merged it down into their daily publishing. Sad.

Top Comment: edit: The Economist's The world this week on their website seems to be exactly I'm looking for. It has 2 sections, Politics this week and Business this week. It has audio reading, but not on any podcast platform. Click "Weekly edition" on their website to find it. Lol, I was just going to ask the same question. I think the usual answer is to subscribe to weekly publications like The Economist or The New Yorker. I don't agree with the common advice to forgo the news completely. Because of dumb reasons like it causes stress or you can't do anything about it.

Decent not-too-biased weekly news source?

Main Post:

Perhaps in a form of newsletter? Listening to a podcast is too time-consuming and annoying.

  • For tech, I usually just use one of the Hacker News weekly newsletters.
  • For science, I sometimes checked Quanta Magazine weekly newsletter. But the choice of topic is rather eccentric.
  • For business, didn't find any good ones.
  • For general news, if you just wants the facts, there's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Current_events .
  • For reddit, I wish we have a weekly summary of what happened to reddit each week. Like the trending meme, popular post, drama, etc. I sometimes feel out of the loop. Searching for "weekly news summary" funnily returns a lot of crypto stuffs.

I'm aware there are daily news aggregators that aggregate news from various sources, but couldn't find anything weekly.

I think the economist is worth the money. The paper magazine.

Any good weekly newsletters/news?

Main Post:

Looking at the news daily gives me anxiety and stresses me out. It's almost an addiction at this point. I still want to be informed but I am looking for moderation.

I was wondering if there are any good weekly newsletters that can go into my inbox with all the major happenings and whatnot.

Thanks for the help!

Top Comment: I've tried to cut down on checking news sites and instead rely on weekly newsletters. i would check the news reflexively throughout the day and it became a huge distraction. Some of my favorite weekly email newsletters are Harper's Weekly Review, Longform, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker.
